Roasting on hold…

Well it’s sad times here in roasting HQ. My IMEX CR-100 (otherwise known as the cheapo Korean wunderkind coffee roaster) has officially kicked the bucket.

I have no idea what I did to it, but as soon as I plug it into a power point and hit go, it shorts my entire appliances circuit in my house, causing much unhappiness to the rest of my non power surge circuit breaker tripping appliances, just sitting there minding their own business.

So in a very sad moment for me I was forced to buy some pre-roasted beans today… of dubious freshness as well, seeing as I can’t be sure if the roast date is the 2nd or the 7th of March.

I may move on to try some pan roasting, but from what I can gather at a glance it’s a lot of effort to try and get any sort of evenness in roast colour and consistency.

If anyone has any bright ideas then feel free to let me know… I’ve got about 20kg of beans just sitting there waiting for me to roast them up…and nothing to do it with…

R.I.P little roaster… You served me well…

Actually what am I saying… It lasted less than six months and carked it… piece of crap…

  1. Are you opposed to using an air popper popcorn maker?
That is what we have used for the last 2 years & while the roast times are shorter than ideal you can get a good even roast consistently. We got ours for 7 USD & it is still kicking.

  2. Hey Collin,

The IMEX basically is a glorified popper… So i have no real issues with using one. I seriously doubt I could get one for $7 here…but I may start having a look around… thanks for the suggestion.

I’d really love to get a drum roaster like the Hot Top, but I don’t roast often enough to make it worth the cost…

I’ll be looking around for a new option soon.

    Cheers,
    Matt

  3. About $790 US apparently. But it’s fully sick (technically speaking of course).

Think i’ll try and get the IMEX repaired, or find a cheap popper type thing that will do the job.

I’m having more and more doubts about the wiring in this house… The blender died recently too… It could all be part of some kind of subtle conspiracy to give me the shits.

  4. I got the hottop, unreal! ~1100 AUD including delivery to Sydney for the digital model from hottop Brisbane. I am loving mine!

  5. Lee, I am very jealous. You went from nothing to the Hottop… which is a fair outlay. Hope the roasting pays off for you as much as it has for me.

    Thanks for stopping by.

  6. Matt, yeah it was a big investment, but I knew from spending lots of money on average espresso machines and grinders, than when it comes to coffee, you put up big first time, or spend half as much three or four times over before deciding to get the best anyway.

Also, I hadnt spoilt myself in a long while, I work long hours, and I deserved it :)
