I reckon Australia is a bit better, but granted, not much. Rick Stein said that throughout his tour of the UK for his Food Heroes series that he didn’t get a decent steak anywhere in all his travels.

Matt and Bec, I think I came to that conclusion too after a while… sad really. But then Australia is no different… France on the other hand… those people will not tolerate badly cooked steak :)

Mae: Such is the problem with photography making things look a whole lot better than they actually were… I bet you have it all the time :)

Cass: I guess we just lucked out on all counts… though the lack of care about service to me is not something I look past easily. As it were I think there’s plenty of other places more deserving of my custom than The Eagle.

Have to say the two times we have been food was delectable – ate more then should have! Key is to timing visits right – early evening for dinner or late lunch on weekend. Service not great but that is not what I go there for. Great atmosphere and large servings of good wholesome food in season.

The photos look great though, had i not read your notes i wouldn’t have thought that the beef was unsatisfying. There’s nothing more annoying than ordering a rare and getting a well-done! I feel your pain…

Hmmm – our experience so far is that English places generally overdo steak – even places which claim to specialise in steaks. We’ve been disappointed on more than one occasion. We’ve pretty well given up ordering steak for fear of getting a well done steak no matter what you order.
