Poker & Cigars

No food here, so run away now if that’s all you’re after… And if you’re reading this post through a feed reader like bloglines or google reader, or something obscure I don’t know about, then do yourself a favour and head on over to the site to witness the grainy beauty that is a bunch of guys smoking cigars and playing poker, in full lightbox hipness…

Incidentally, we started night off with a thai beef salad and a warm kipfler potato salad and a feisty Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon… so… you know… relax. This gourmet does not take a night off.

Mr Barista This is how you light it. DTM Some chumpThe Flop Smoke master

Somewhere around midnight, things got hazy Gav

Congratulations to dtm for the comeback of the century to kick all of our arses, and for bringing over some damn fine Mexican Maragogype coffee that along with the cigars, and wine, kept us upping and downing all night.

For the aficionados out there, the list of cigars we had was:

Me: Montechristo Petit Tubos (courtesy of Cin)
DTM: Montechristo No. 2
Mr Barista: Cuesta Rey robusto No. 5 maduro
Gav the cigar virgin: H.D.M Epicure No. 2
Smoke Master: H.D.M Epicure No. 2 and a Padron 1926 series No 2. maduro

  1. We’ll have to schedule another night – how bout 1st or 2nd friday of December

    great photo’s – smoke master looks scary…..

  2. looks like a scene out of a godfather movie or something. :D
your photos captured the essence of what i think have been missing from the poker nights my friends hold.. the smokey atmosphere and the ambience. ;)

  3. Mmmm, poker and cigars. And wine, and beef. I can think of worse ways to spend an evening. Looks like a grand time. How does a girl get in on a game like that? :D

  4. Dtm: book it in… we’ll make it happen.

ilingc: the booze helps too, and the fact that there’s real money at stake… We’re all pretty nice guys in real life… but when those chips are down… hey I can finally use that term in context…

sid: Girl’s that enjoy smoking, drinking, and generally being crass are more than welcome to come along… Those that don’t are assigned beverage dispensing roles. Take your pick and come on down :)

jules: it’s a wonder what a little lighting and smoke can do for a bunch of nerds sitting around a table… As for the Montechristo, at least you’re not American… lack of trade embargoes mean the path to cigar pleasure is as short as the trip to your nearest bottle shop. Or online through Baranows.

  5. It’s crazy seeing how much poker has permeated the lives of West Australians! Cosign on the moodiness of the shot – what camera do you use? I’m thinking it must be some kind of DSLR judging by all the mad DOF shots you post.

    cheers
    Max

  6. Hey Max, yeh it was “late night poker” for me… and then all the World Poker Championships on tv… recently it’s been just for fun, and a good excuse to smoke cigars away from less than approving partners… The camera I use is your entry level dSLR, the Canon 350D with a 50mm f1.8 lens. Low light + wide aperture + smoke = cheap and easy moodiness.

  7. Those shots make the 50mm f1.8 look like moer than an entry level lens! I’m thinking about what camera to get next, i had my eye on the 17-85mm IS but a lens with a nice wide appeture sounds pretty tasty as well. Do you find many problems using it with the 350D being a 50mm lens and all?

  8. Not sure what you mean by this one Max… The 50mm is a beautiful lens, and a great additional to the 350D, I’d recommend anyone buy one, for the price, they give almost unbeatable quality… my only problem is relying on the low light aspect of it too often, and forgetting to turn the ISO down afterwards…

What do you shoot with at the moment ?
